CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Education is universally recognized as a fundamental human right and a key driver of social and economic development (UNESCO, 2015). In the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) of Nigeria, the educational system plays a crucial role in shaping the future of its citizens, particularly in junior secondary schools. The effectiveness of educational programmes implemented in this region significantly influences the teaching and learning processes (Omotayo & Adu, 2017).
The FCT educational system encompasses various programmes aimed at enhancing teaching and learning outcomes. These programmes include curriculum development, teacher training, instructional materials provision, and educational policies formulation (Okwelle & Nwankwo, 2018). They are designed to cater to the diverse needs of students and ensure holistic development (Abbas & Alabi, 2019).
One of the primary objectives of educational programmes in the FCT is to improve the quality of teaching in junior secondary schools. Research indicates that effective teaching strategies are essential for student engagement and achievement (Obanya, 2014). Hence, initiatives such as continuous professional development for teachers are implemented to enhance their pedagogical skills and knowledge (Ololube, 2015).
Furthermore, the FCT educational programmes prioritize the enhancement of learning experiences for students. Adequate provision of learning resources and infrastructure contributes to a conducive learning environment (Adeyemi & Aremu, 2016). Additionally, extracurricular activities and co-curricular programmes complement formal education and foster holistic development among students (Adeyemi, 2018).
The impact of educational programmes on teaching and learning in junior secondary schools extends beyond academic outcomes. It also encompasses socio-economic development and nation-building. A well-educated populace is better equipped to contribute positively to the socio-economic development of the FCT and Nigeria as a whole (Ogunkola & Olufayo, 2020). Moreover, education promotes social cohesion and fosters national unity by bridging ethnic and cultural divides (Onyene, 2021).
In conclusion, the educational programmes implemented in the Federal Capital Territory significantly influence teaching and learning in junior secondary schools. Through curriculum development, teacher training, and provision of
