CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Communication plays an important role in the management of schools because it helps principals, teachers, students, and other staff members understand one another clearly. In secondary schools, the way principals communicate with teachers can influence how teachers carry out their duties and responsibilities. Effective communication creates trust, cooperation, motivation, and a peaceful working environment, while poor communication may lead to misunderstanding, low morale, and poor job performance among teachers (Adu et al., 2021). In many public secondary schools in Nigeria, principals are expected to guide teachers through proper communication in order to improve teaching and learning outcomes. Studies have shown that principals who communicate openly and respectfully often achieve better teacher commitment and productivity (Ibrahim & Daniel, 2022).

Teachers’ performance is very important in the educational system because teachers are directly responsible for students’ academic development. Teacher performance includes lesson delivery, classroom management, punctuality, assessment of students, and participation in school activities. When teachers perform effectively, students tend to achieve better academic results and schools become more productive. However, several factors affect teachers’ performance, including leadership style, work environment, motivation, and communication from school administrators (Owan & Agunwa, 2021). Among these factors, communication style remains one of the major tools principals use in coordinating school activities and motivating teachers.

Principal communication style refers to the manner and approach principals use in passing information, giving instructions, listening to teachers, and resolving conflicts within the school system. Some principals use democratic communication styles where teachers are involved in decision making, while others use authoritarian styles where decisions are made without consulting teachers. Research has revealed that democratic and supportive communication styles improve teachers’ morale and encourage better performance, while harsh and unfriendly communication styles may reduce teachers’ interest in their work (Akinyemi & Adejumo, 2023). In public secondary schools in Kaduna State, many teachers face challenges such as work pressure, inadequate facilities, and lack of motivation, which may affect their performance if communication between principals and teachers is weak.

Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State has several public secondary schools that depend on effective school leadership for smooth academic activities. Despite efforts by the government to improve education, there are still complaints about poor teacher commitment, lateness, absenteeism, and declining academic performance among students. These problems may be connected to how principals communicate with teachers in schools. Therefore, this study seeks to examine the impact of principal communication style on teachers’ performance in public secondary schools in Kaura Local Government, Kaduna State.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The performance of teachers in public secondary schools has become a major concern in many parts of Nigeria, including Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Many schools experience challenges such as poor classroom management, lateness to school, low commitment to duties, and weak student academic performance. Although several factors may contribute to these problems, the communication style used by principals may also
